The 1995 Dayton peace deal that put an end to years of bloody war, forced ethnic Serbs -- who make up about 31 percent of the population -- to accept Bosnia's independence. In exchange they got their own statelet of Republika Srpska (RS) with 49 percent of the Balkan nation's territory.
